The museum is at 2 Science Museum Road in Tsim Sha Tsui East, Kowloon, within reach of Hung Hom. From Kowloon Harbourfront, a four-star aparthotel, the museum is about an 18-minute walk or about six minutes by car.

The museum opened in 1991, after the idea for a permanent science museum began in 1976. Its galleries include the InnoTech Gallery, Living Tech Gallery, Earth Science Gallery and Biodiversity Gallery.

Planning around galleries and demonstrations

Planning around galleries and demonstrations

The permanent galleries and scheduled demonstrations give you two ways to structure a visit. The Hong Kong Tourism Board describes the Energy Machine as a four-storey exhibit demonstrating energy conversion; another collection highlight is Betsy, Cathay Pacific's first DC-3 airliner.

Demonstrations include Liquid Nitrogen sessions and The Fun of Static Electricity. The museum lists science shows and demonstrations at the G/F Demonstration Theatre or 2/F Demo Theatre; admission is free on a first-come, first-served basis, and programmes may change without notice. Check the official site before you go for the latest demonstration schedule.

Children must stay with an adult during the visit and while using exhibits. Eating and drinking are not permitted inside the exhibition halls, so plan breaks outside those spaces.

Facilities and access for different visitors

Facilities and access for different visitors

The museum says it strives to provide barrier-free access and directs visitors to its accessibility information for details about facilities for people with disabilities. Two breastfeeding rooms are located in the exhibition halls, on the G/F and 3/F.

Large luggage and items that could inconvenience others are best left behind. Staff may ask you to store belongings in the cloakroom or may deny entry, depending on the items. The museum shop, operated by COG Limited, is in the 1/F lobby.

Combine the visit with the History Museum

The Hong Kong Museum of History is directly opposite the Science Museum, making the two museums easy to pair in one outing. For a separate look at its visit planning, the Hong Kong Museum of History visit guide covers hours, location and practical details.

Allow time for both museums if you plan to visit each; the Science Museum’s interactive galleries and demonstrations offer a different focus from its neighbour. You can decide how much time to give each based on the galleries or programmes you want to see.
